And it came in the mail about a week later. I paid $22 plus shipping for Murder-Set-Pieces on DVD. I looked online and writer/director Nick Palumbo was so livid at how Lionsgate released his film that he cobbled together his own director’s cut, reassembling the film to his original vision. I hate censorship and I despise films being cut for “moral” reasons, so immediately I was on the side of this thing just on principal. And all I found out about it at that point was what Lionsgate had done to the film. We got a copy of it when I just so happened to be working at a video store back then and being the movie nerd I am, I researched it. It was released, however! And on a major label no less! After touring various local backwood, hellhole film fests Lionsgate films bought it up and released it in some sort of a bastardized, R rated state, removing 20 random minutes here and there throughout the film and barfing it out onto DVD in 2007. It’s a misogynistic, sociopathic, ugly, stupid, and downright pathetic. It was marketed on a lie (claiming to be the first American NC-17 horror film when in actuality it was too minimalistic to even BE RATED as a film) and it looks like it was directed by a deranged 14 year old suffering from seizures who can’t stop pausing and restarting the camera. The music is stock, repetitive and drowns out the actor’s dialogue. It’s aiming for a gross out factor in lieu of any real terror and it fails at both things simultaneously. It’s a horror film that is completely plotless. I take great comfort in this amazing…AMAZING shitpile of a “film.” Make no mistake about it, Murder Set Pieces here has absolutely no redeeming qualities of any kind on it’s surface.
